I have been walking the same granite staircase into the same cove at low tide for six years. The steps are worn smooth at the centre, cupped by a century of boots, and they carry a particular smell — iodine and wet basalt, the mineral exhale of stone that spent most of its existence underwater. At the bottom, where the staircase gives way to dark boulders and shallow pools, the world quiets in a way that has nothing to do with silence.

The Anemone Does Not Wait

Anthopleura elegantissima closes into a dark glistening sphere the moment the tide recedes — tentacles retracted, column armoured in shell grit. It does not stay closed. Within twenty minutes, the oral disc reopens and the zoochlorellae inside its tissue resume photosynthesis, a transaction between animal and alga that predates every human contract by half a billion years.

A pool holds water for six hours, then becomes sky. Every creature in it has solved this problem differently — and none of them consulted us.

The urchins take the opposite approach. Strongylocentrotus purpuratus bores into the basalt itself, rasping out a custom socket with its Aristotle's lantern, a five-toothed apparatus that turns solid rock into a personal berth. When the water drops, the urchin does not close — it waits, wedged into its excavation, for the tide to return. Two strategies, one shoreline.
