The case for growing our seawalls
Concrete seawalls fail in decades. Kelp forests and calcifying algae can build living barriers that heal themselves as the tide rises.
Every coastal city is now a laboratory in deferred maintenance. The grey armor poured in the last century is cracking under faster currents, higher surges, and the slow chemistry of salt fatigue. Engineers patch it, repour it, and watch the cycle repeat. A growing group of ocean architects argues that the better move is to stop fighting the water and start cultivating it.
The idea is borrowed from reefs. Living seawalls are built around substrates that accrete minerals, trap sediment, and host kelp, mussels, and calcifying algae. Over seasons the structure thickens, roughens, and becomes habitat. The wall still protects the shore, but it also feeds nearby waters, stores carbon, and repairs small storm damage without a crew.
The future coastline is not a barrier. It is a garden that happens to hold back the sea.
Pilots in the North Sea and the Pacific Northwest have shown that engineered kelp attachment points can cut wave energy while supporting juvenile fish. Maintenance drops dramatically within five years. The question is whether permits and insurers can keep pace with a wall that grows.
