The discipline of the almost blank room

A near-white surface asks more of a room than any flourish ever could.

In 2022, a team in Limenas removed three layers of taupe paint from a municipal hall. Beneath it, the original stone held the room together: cool, nearly blank, and unexpectedly formal. The change was not decorative; it altered how every object was allowed to speak.

Restraint is an active material

Near-white does not disappear. It records the edge of a chair, the grain of a timber table, and the exact distance between two lamps. When the ground is this clear, proportion stops being an abstract principle and becomes the atmosphere of the room.
