The Niello Ground
I
Alloy aged in darkness
Silver, copper, lead, sulphur — fused at 800°C into a dense black that holds its cool tone for generations.
II
Line cut to catch light
Every scroll is engraved at a deliberate depth — shallow enough to glint, deep enough to hold the silver wire tight.
III
Polished by hand, graded by eye
Masters grade the thom dam by its spotlessness — one speck of copper bloom and the piece is set aside for re-fire.
IV
Tarnish-edged silver
The bright engraved line is never alone — a faint tarnish halo traces each curve, proof the metal was worked hot.
