§ II. FOUR PRINCIPLES OF THE UNDERWORKS

What we build down here, and why.

— transcribed from the maintenance ledger, sector 04-B —
01

The city is the machine.

Concrete rots slower than promises. We service the infrastructure we already have — thirty years of it — before we cast anything new.

SECTOR 04-B
02

Prosthetics before promises.

Every replacement limb ships with a ledger of failures — six field iterations, none of them clean. The scars are documentation.

03

Silence over spectacle.

No launch events, no manifestos. A directive gets stapled to the substation door in the morning; by shift-end the crew has already implemented half of it.

DIRECTIVE 41
04

The dark is a working condition.

We do not lighten the interface to comfort you. Fourteen shifts underground and your eyes adjust — the palette was calibrated to that adjusted eye.
