Three years aboard a research cruiser taught me that the safest distance from the light is also the most useless one — and that the engineers who designed our gold shield knew it long before we did.
The first time I watched the shield ignite, I was eating a cold ration of pickled greens from the oxygen garden and arguing with a navigator named Ozan about whether the bloom was technically a color. He said no — color requires a retina, and ours had stopped registering anything that bright by week three. I think about that conversation more than I should.

Our shield is not, strictly speaking, a mirror. It is a one-mile mosaic of gold-leaf tiles laid down by a robot that retired in 2049, and it absorbs the part of the spectrum that would otherwise turn the crew bay into a kiln. The rest it throws back as a bloom so bright the cameras render it as a solid white disc — a hole punched in the picture. For a long time I thought the bloom was the point. It isn't. The point is the deep shadow behind it, where the ship lives, where the work happens, where nobody ever sees us.
