Kasure design principles Chapter 2 03 / 12

What the brush leaves out

1

Emptiness speaks louder

Yohaku is not blank space. It is the loudest silence in the composition — every void carries intention.

2

One mark, fully committed

A single unbroken brush line says more than a hundred cautious revisions. Hesitation shows in the ink.

3

Dry stroke leaves a record

飛白 maps velocity into visible grain. Speed and hesitation — both legible in the brush's drying trail.

4

Paper shapes the ink

Washi fibres absorb, resist, and soften. The ground is half the painting — it decides where the stroke ends.
