My first patrol as chief of the boat began at 0347 on a Tuesday. By the time we reached 400 feet, the ambient noise floor had dropped 14 decibels. The logbook records only the numbers.

The Acoustic Ceiling

Sound entering the thermocline refracts—“bending,” in the vernacular—and it is the closest thing to invisibility a 7,000-ton steel cylinder will ever get. Junior sonar techs learn to trust the physics more than their own ears. I have watched them stare at a blank waterfall display for an entire watch, refusing to second-guess what the math promised.
