How We Edit

1
The source, not the copy
Every edition begins with the original manuscript leaf, examined under natural light and transcribed by hand.
2
Ink before haste
Iron-gall ink darkens over centuries. Our readings account for two hundred years of oxidation in every note-head.
3
Four voices, one text
Each part is read against its companions. A misprint in the second violin affects the viola line below.
4
Silence is editorial
What we leave untouched matters as much as what we annotate. Erasure is never the first tool.
