I kept the receiver beside the kitchen window on October 14, 1983, while rain worked the gutters flat. At 11:17 p.m., the usual hiss broke into three clean tones, then a voice reading numbers no one in town had written down.

The quiet was part of the message

By morning, every clock at the lab was seven minutes slow. We logged the discrepancy in blue carbon paper, sealed the cassette in a lunch tin, and agreed on one rule: if the signal returned, we would answer from outside.
