Chapter 02 · Craft / The Painted Frame

How we paint a scene

Four habits that keep the gouache honest.

Paint the field first, the figure second.

The amber backdrop is laid down in flat gouache before any character is sketched, so the warmth lives under everything that follows.

Round every corner a child would touch.

Silhouettes, titling, button caps — nothing sharp enough to startle. Friendliness is a shape decision before it is a color one.

Let the brush show its hand.

A scene with no visible stroke reads like plastic. We leave one streak of olive in every horizon — small enough to feel painted, large enough to feel honest.

Twelve frames a second, never more.

We hold the limited animation cadence on purpose. The slight stutter is the rhythm of the medium — smoothing it would smooth the soul out with it.
