I spent three weeks last autumn replaying every act with a capture card and a notebook, tracking how often I instinctively reversed direction. The answer surprised me. In Marble Zone alone, I backtracked forty-seven times across three acts. The level design funnels you into hidden underground caverns, spring-loaded shortcuts to upper platforms, and secret alcoves stacked with extra lives. None of it rewards pure speed.

Good momentum is only meaningful when you have earned it. The speed is the dessert, not the meal — and the best designers in 1991 understood that perfectly.
