Last February, outside Pond Inlet, I watched a male owl hold the same low rise for forty minutes. Against a sky the colour of cold steel, his body vanished first; only two lemon-bright eyes kept their position in the wind.
The field mark is restraint
We tend to call the bird white, then stop looking. But each charcoal bar is a useful fact, each feather shadow a note about age and sex. The best field plates do not decorate that evidence; they leave enough air around it to be read.
