The Case for Software You Can Feel
We spent a decade flattening every surface into glass. What we lost was the quiet confidence of a button that looks like it can actually be pressed.
For three winters I kept the same 2009 music player on a shelf by my desk, plugged into nothing, just to look at it. Its dial was real metal, its felt-lined case caught dust the way a wallet does, and pressing play left a small mechanical sigh you could feel through the casing. Nobody had to explain how it worked.
Texture was never decoration
The argument against rich interfaces was always that the stitching and the brushed metal were lies — pixels pretending to be leather. But the stitching told you where one panel ended and another began. The bevel told you the rectangle was a button and not a label. We called it skeuomorphism and treated it like a costume, when really it was a grammar.
A surface that imitates a material is making a promise: this behaves the way the thing it resembles behaves. Flat design quietly broke that promise and asked us to memorize it instead.
Last autumn I rebuilt a settings screen for a reading app and gave every toggle a real recessed track, a glossy knob, a faint inner shadow. Testers stopped asking which controls were tappable. The felt did the explaining so the copy didn't have to.
