The slow lane is the fast lane

We spent a decade racing to add features. The networks that win the next one will be the ones that learned to wait.

Last winter I spent two weeks sitting beside a fibre-rollout crew in Jurong, watching them splice cable by hand. Nobody was in a hurry. The lead technician, a man named Wei, told me the joints he rushed in 2014 are the ones still throwing faults today. The slow ones never come back.

That stayed with me. For years our industry treated speed as the only virtue worth measuring — faster launches, faster patches, faster everything. We shipped a connectivity dashboard in 2023 that nobody asked for and quietly retired it eleven months later. The cost was not the build. It was the trust.

What deliberate networks get right

The teams that move deliberately are not slower in outcome — they are slower in commitment. They let a decision sit, run migrations when people are awake, and leave fewer rollbacks behind.
