At half past six, the lamps along the western road were still burning. Their circles of brass light found the wet stones, a torn ticket, and one neat line of ash beside the curb. The crowd saw only weather. We saw a sequence, and waited for it to speak.

By noon, three witnesses had supplied three different evenings. The clock at the station disagreed with them all. Inspector Vale returned to the doorway, measured the distance between the latch and the rain, then asked the question no one had thought to ask: who had reason to leave quietly?
