At first light, the painted face does not look old. It looks newly argued into being: red clay pressed over the brown basket ground, yellow bands tightened around ringed eyes, black soot sharpening the bridge of the nose. I watched the workshop floor turn gritty under bare heels while each correction made the mask less decorative and more awake.

Fresh color is a public promise

The point is not preservation under glass. The point is return. A season asks the object to show up again with stronger edges, visible hands, and a surface that admits its labor. In that sense the most honest archive is not a sealed room; it is the repainting table, still smelling of clay and damp vine.
