The case for the slow pin

A jewel scarab takes ninety seconds to set right and a hundred years to fade. The math of patience, in a single setting tray.

I spent two weeks last winter re-pinning a tray of Chrysina resplendens that a hurried predecessor had mounted at an angle. Each beetle sits on black setting foam under glass, and at the wrong tilt the seventy chitinous layers in the elytra throw their gold somewhere you cannot see it. Square the specimen and the metal comes back.

Structure is not surface

The green is not a pigment. It is geometry — light bent through stacked layers until a wavelength survives and the rest cancels. That is why a flat photograph lies about these animals: move the drawer six degrees and a green scarab reads copper, then silver, then green again. The mount has to respect that, or the work is wasted.

A good setting tray is an argument about time: even spacing, square pins, one label per specimen, nothing decorative that the next century will have to undo.

So we keep the grid disciplined. No loose scatter, no ornament, no cream card stock fighting the dark foam. The label below each beetle carries genus, locality, date, and the collector's initials, set in plain type. The specimen is the headline; everything else is caption.
