The Plate Was Never Quiet Silver
A chased dish from the fourth century turns royal power into glare, hoofbeat, and deliberate shadow.
I first saw the dish under a low museum lamp, where the kingβs gilded shoulder refused to behave like decoration. The silver field had gone dark with age, and that darkness made the raised gold feel political rather than pretty.
Relief is a system of rank
The workshop did not merely picture a hunt; it organized attention in circles. Rim, ground, figure, weapon, animal, and inscription each occupy a different depth, so the eye reads authority before it reads motion.
