The mathematics that built a sky
Standing before the Samarkand portals, I stopped believing ornament was decoration. It is argument, made in glaze.
I spent two weeks last winter sitting in the courtyard of the Ulugh Beg madrasah, sketching the same ten-point rosette until my fingers learned its logic. The masons of 1420 left no drawings, only the wall itself — and the wall is a proof you can walk into.
The grid was never neutral
What looks like infinite repetition is, up close, a sequence of decisions. Each turquoise star sits at the intersection of two invisible circles, and the white tendrils that bind them are not filler but the very seams that keep the geometry honest. Strip the colour away and the cobalt ground still hums with structure.

The genius of the Registan was to make that argument legible from across a square. A pilgrim arriving in the fifteenth century could not read the Kufic banding, but could feel its order — the same order the astronomers inside were measuring in the night sky overhead.
