At San Vitale, the field does not sit behind the image; it makes the image possible. Deep green tesserae turn the vault into a measured darkness, then a handful of angled gold pieces catch the visitor as they move. The result is not decoration. It is attention, directed.
A surface with a point of view
When we built Lumen Arc’s reading surface, we kept that discipline close. The page begins in green, the rules arrive in gold, and every bright mark has a job: name a section, hold a pause, or bring a decision forward. At the 2026 spring review, the team removed nine ornamental accents; the remaining three finally made the argument visible.
