Last winter, I rebuilt my reading list around the books that looked least trustworthy. Their covers shouted from a wire rack; inside, every sentence knew exactly where the trapdoor was.

The plot takes the long way round

The best stories do not march toward a clean answer. They double back through a motel lobby, a missed call, a name underlined twice—and leave you holding the page a little tighter than before.
