The case for drawing fire correctly wrong.

Every studio has a house recipe for flame — warm orange, licking edges, the smoke curling upward like a stock photo. In 2019 a small team in Kichijōji tore that recipe up and rebuilt fire from six flat triangles.

Long read

I spent two weeks re-watching the same forty-second sequence, frame by frame. The fire was cyan. The fire was magenta. The fire was made of triangles, and none of it wobbled.

Flat colour is a claim.

Turquoise 22D3C5 against a matte 141821 stage — no bloom, no glow pass forgiving your edges. Every triangle either belongs to the fire or does not, and the boundary is drawn by whichever colour got there first.
