We Built the Box Before We Understood It

A protein-error project drifted, by accident, into something that worked — and that was the first thing that scared us.

We had rented half of a two-car garage in Dallas, two folding tables, and a power strip we did not trust. The original aim was modest: reduce the error rate in a protein the company we worked for had given up on. For six weeks nothing happened, which is the honest state of most engineering.

The Reading That Did Not Belong

Then a weight sensor logged a number that was lower than the object on it should have allowed. We assumed a calibration drift and reseated the leads. The number held. We measured the table, the room, the wiring tub — everything that was supposed to be boring — and the boring things stayed boring while the box did not.

"You don't get to choose the day the experiment stops being an experiment. It just stops, and you keep your notes anyway."

What we did next was not brave. We wrote it down, photographed the bench, and taped an index card to the lid with the date and the word PROVISIONAL. The discipline of labeling is the only thing that survives when the physics gets strange. The schematics in the right column are the originals, redrawn for legibility, nothing added.
