On the grey-plastic decade, and what a console quietly taught the rest of consumer electronics.
A 1994 launch refused the cartoon cabinet, photographed itself like industrial equipment, and ended up redrawing the entire shelf — thirty years later the four-symbol logo still translates without a single word of copy.
The thing that always struck me about the Tokyo launch was the photography. Sony's first marketing sheets, pinned to a wall at the Akasaka press preview, did not show kids on couches. They showed the chassis at three-quarter angle, lit like a turbine — matte grey plastic on a black sweep, four small symbols floating beside it as if they were dimensions printed on a spec card. The console wasn't selling fun. It was selling seriousness, in a category that had been dressing itself up in mascots for ten years running.
That choice, repeated across every shelf-talker and every gatefold ad for the rest of the decade, is the part the histories keep underplaying. Ken Kutaragi's engineering bet on the CD format and the custom GPU is well-told. The discipline of the surrounding identity — Helvetica tight, no exclamation marks, a four-symbol mark with no wordmark inside it — is less told, and is arguably what let the brand survive five hardware generations without ever needing a refresh.

Manabu Sakamoto's drawing is so plain that it reads as obvious in hindsight. Triangle, circle, cross, square — colored green, red, blue, pink — arranged in a square. No initials. No country mark. A toddler in São Paulo can identify the green triangle as the "view" button without ever opening a manual; a software engineer in Helsinki uses the same shape vocabulary to debug a controller mapping. It is, functionally, an international road sign that happens to also be a logo.
What the design system around it does is treat each of those four colors as punctuation, not decoration. Cross-blue means primary action — anchor. Triangle-green means positive state. Circle-red means destructive or alert. Square-pink, the rarest of the four, is reserved for one highlight per surface, used the way a copy editor uses an em dash.
