Civic space
The public room begins at the roof
A building earns its welcome when the route across it matters as much as the room within.
Last February, I watched commuters cross a pale roof before work, pausing only where the harbor opened between two low rails. Nobody had been asked to enter, buy, or behave. The slope made a civic promise: the building could be used before it was understood.
Access is a material decision
At the studio, we usually begin public projects with a list of programs. This time we began with a route. A broad, cool surface can make a threshold feel provisional rather than ceremonial; one warm timber edge is enough to tell visitors where the interior gathers.
