The wall is the whole house

In the villages above the First Cataract, paint is not decoration. It is the architecture, the welcome, and the family record, mixed fresh every spring.

I spent two weeks last March in Gharb Soheil, watching Umm Karima recoat the front of her brother's house before the festival. She thinned the turquoise limewash with Nile water in a battered tin pail, then dragged it over the silt adobe in long uneven strokes until the whole facade glowed like shallow water at noon.

Why the blue never goes muted

The cyan is chosen against the desert, not the sky. A wall this saturated reads from the far bank of the river, so a returning fisherman can pick out his own door from a kilometre away. Saffron-yellow doors and a terracotta stair are added last, deliberate warm notes painted by hand so no two houses ever match.
