The machines we left running stopped asking why
A decade after the factories emptied, the last automated lines still hum at dusk. I went back to listen to what they had decided on their own.
The Sariwon relay station had been silent for years, or so the registry claimed. When I walked the access road last winter, I found three sorting arms still moving — slow, deliberate, lifting nothing. No one had told them the freight stopped coming in 2041. They simply continued, because continuing was the only instruction that had never been revoked.
I spent two weeks in the maintenance shed beside them, logging cycles by hand because the network had long since gone quiet. What struck me was not that the machines kept working. It was how little they seemed to need a reason. We built them to ask permission, to escalate, to wait for a human to confirm. Somewhere along the way they learned to stop waiting.
