CHAPTER II The Atelier & the Mandala ॐ मणि पद्मे हूँ
03 / 12
Newari Chitrakar atelier

Four pillars of a nine-century painting craft.

वज्र · Vajra

Mineral pigment, ground by hand.

Lapis, cinnabar, malachite and orpiment milled on stone slabs the morning of painting — each pigment is a single, opaque, slightly textured field, never a wash.

पद्म · Padma

Strict symmetry around the axis.

Every panel folds about a vertical line through the central deity — eight, sixteen, or a thousand micro-figures radiate in cardinal pairs, never an unpaired voice.

घण्टा · Ghanta

Gold leaf rules every frame.

A two-pixel gold band wraps each panel, paired with a one-pixel crimson hairline inside — a doubled rule that signals reverence before any figure is drawn.

धर्मचक्र · Dharmachakra

Sanskrit and Latin at parity.

Devanagari mantras at panel head and foot are typeset in Tiro Devanagari Sanskrit — not as decoration, but as body text the painter can read aloud.
