I joined the research vessel Horizon on a Tuesday morning in late November, southeast of the Azores. The crew had been at sea for three weeks, running a multibeam sonar array across a stretch of mid-Atlantic ridge that had never been mapped at resolution higher than a kilometer. What they found in the first seventy-two hours changed nearly everything we assumed about the terrain beneath us.

What the Sonar Found

The conventional charts are derived from satellite altimetry, estimating the seabed from gravitational pull measured in orbit. At two kilometers per pixel, an entire mountain range registers as a gentle slope. Canyon systems that rival the Grand Canyon vanish entirely. The ocean floor, in other words, has been a guess—and a rough one at that.
