Every Dimension a Contract

The 700-ton paper trail behind the Nova stack — and the drafting discipline modern engineering teams have quietly abandoned.

On the morning of September 8, 1964, a team of fourteen draftsmen at Bay Meridian completed the final section view of the first-stage tank section. The drawing, designated LVDC-71M200001, ran forty-six sheets. Every weld, every rivet pattern, every fuel-line routing was dimensioned to tolerances of ±0.005 inches. This was not documentation in any modern sense of the word — it was a binding contract between the engineers who designed the vehicle and the technicians who would build it, written not in language but in precise geometric projection.

The Weight of Paper

I spent three weeks last winter at the Range Systems archive, paging through original Nova stack blueprints. The ammonia-developed cyanotype has aged to warm sepia at the edges, but the white lines remain sharp after sixty years. What struck me most was not the complexity — I expected that — but the uniformity. Every sheet follows the same title-block format, the same dimensioning conventions, the same line weights. The system was designed so that any qualified engineer could read any sheet from any stage without translation.

The drawing was the single source of truth. If it wasn’t on the sheet, it didn’t fly.
