II Chapter II · The Four Movements of Anxiety

en route to the fjord-bridge, at sunset

How the whole landscape bends
in sympathy with the figure.

The sky becomes blood and tongues of fire.

Warm strata press downward — five undulating bands, never one flat block. Heat is the gravity of the picture, pulling the eye toward the horizon seam.

The fjord bruises cold beneath the figure.

Cobalt and navy run the lower half — a counter-weight to the heat above. Two distant pedestrians keep walking; their calm sharpens the foreground panic.

The figure is elongated, attenuated, dripping.

Body distortion follows the air — shoulders dissolve into the bridge planks. Sickly green-grey face suspended between the warm sky and the cold water.

One vertiginous diagonal — scarce, decisive.

The bridge-rail receding to an off-stage vanishing point is used once per page. Never twice. The diagonal is the system's most expensive line.
