I first saw a Fatu Hiva tapa cloth in the archive at Atua Moana, rolled rather than framed because the curator insisted that flattening would destroy the bark's ridge texture — and the ridge, she said, was itself part of the record. Each fiber of beaten mulberry carried the hand of its maker.
Enata as genealogical record
The enata figure — a stylized human form repeated in horizontal bands — is not ornament. A figure oriented left records a maternal line; two enata touching at the shoulder mark a union. The tapa does not illustrate genealogy. It performs it.
The cloth does not record the story. The cloth is the story. The ink is the voice.

This reframes information design as a discipline older than print. The tiki eye functions not as a face but as boundary punctuation: a dark center ringed in ochre that closes one claim before the next begins.
