Why New Orleans Dresses
the Night in Gold
A field note on purple, green, and the ritual of throwing joy into the dark.
Before sunrise on St. Charles Avenue, the street is rinsed clean and the oaks hold their breath. By noon, purple beads flash from balconies; gold doubloons turn passersby into the procession.
A city builds its own weather
The ritual is less about spectacle than permission. A float rolls past, a hand lifts, and the distance between watcher and participant disappears. The parade keeps moving because generosity is its engine.
