A clock meant to keep time for ten thousand years forces a question every engineer eventually faces: who maintains the thing after you are gone?

The shaft is five hundred feet of limestone, drilled into a mountain in the Sierra Diablo of West Texas, and the bronze cams inside it were cut to outlast the language we use to describe them. I spent two weeks last autumn at the base of that shaft, watching a machinist file a tolerance so fine it would only matter to someone not yet born.

Maintenance Is the Real Design

We tend to celebrate the moment a thing is finished. But a clock built for ten millennia is never finished — it is only handed off. The hardest engineering problem was never the escapement or the bronze; it was writing instructions a stranger could follow after every contemporary tool, alloy, and assumption had been forgotten.

So the markings on the cams are epigraphic, carved to be read by hand and eye alone — no battery, no firmware, no cloud. The five-digit year is not an affectation. It is a promise, made in stone, that someone planned for the column to roll past the year ten thousand.
