The Hill Remembers What We Leave Behind

A field note from northern Lithuania on the hand-made marks that outlast the hands that placed them.

The field grows by accretion

I arrived at Domantai on a wet October morning, when the path up the mound was the colour of old oak. No architect had planned the field. One cross leaned into another; a small iron sun caught the pale sky; names and dates gathered in ink beneath the grain.

The first recorded crosses appeared here in the nineteenth century, but the gesture is not sealed in a museum date. A family leaves one after a promise, a pilgrim ties a rosary, a carver returns with a new finial. By dusk, the hill has accepted another story.
