The Mineral That Refuses To Stop Glowing

Three winters in a sealed lab tower, one impossible green light, and the long argument over what we actually pulled out of the ground.

I spent two weeks last December rewriting the lab's intake protocol around a single shard, because the old one assumed nothing on the shelf would still be radiating after midnight. This one was. It sat behind four inches of leaded glass and kept throwing a flat acidic green across the dark room, steady as a pilot light, indifferent to whether anyone was watching.

What The Geiger Counter Wouldn't Say

The official report from the Cedar Flats survey called it "anomalous fluorescence," which is the kind of phrase you write when the instruments disagree with each other. By February we had measured the same crystal six ways and gotten six confident, contradictory answers. The green never wavered.

So we stopped trying to name it and started describing it instead: a faceted fragment, roughly the size of a fist, throwing rays in a dozen directions at once. Whatever it is, it has outlasted every theory we built to contain it.
