THROWING & JOINING
03 / 12
What the seam remembers
백자의 성질
Two halves, joined at the middle
Thrown in upper and lower halves, then luted at the equator — the seam is kept, never hidden.
Fired above twelve hundred
Iron-free kaolin in a reduction kiln past 1250°C turns milk-white glaze faintly celadon in raking light.
Imperfection held on purpose
The silhouette sags a little to one side; the join never lines up perfectly — that unevenness is the jar.
Shown against the dark
Museums set each jar on a charcoal ground so the milky bluish glow reads — the only honest way to see it.
