Make the pause easy to find
Last winter, I spent two weeks measuring the space between my last email and the next meeting. The answer was usually zero. A square of chocolate, a hot mug, and one chair by the window made the afternoon feel less like a queue and more like a choice.
In York in 1935, a chocolate-and-wafer bar turned that choice into a small ritual: four ridges, one wrapper, no decision fatigue. The point was never to escape the day. It was to give the day a clean seam, a moment where work could stop without becoming a story about stopping.
