Make the cut: delete the noise

A field note on editing products until every remaining decision earns its place.

Last November, I rebuilt the dispatch board for a six-person studio in three afternoons. The old version had fourteen filters, six status colors, and a toolbar that asked for a decision before the work appeared. We removed nine controls. The board became useful the moment it stopped explaining itself.

Less, but sharper

That cut changed the rhythm of the room. People opened one view, marked the next move, and went back to making things: no ceremony, no hunting. A strong system can be loud without becoming cluttered; its boundaries should make the signal harder to miss.
