Last October, I followed a two-lane stretch outside Tulsa until a red-and-white pole sign rose above the cottonwoods. The counter was modest, but its stripes, bright lettering, and round badge made one clear promise: you had arrived somewhere that knew how to welcome a traveler.

Make the welcome legible from the road

The lesson is less about nostalgia than recognition. A strong sign does its work at thirty miles an hour, then keeps doing it at the counter: red gathers the eye, white gives it rest, and a little gold says the evening might improve. Good hospitality starts before the order is placed.
