When the heavens began to sing in ratios

Kepler did not hear music in the planets. He found a discipline for listening to change.

In the autumn of 1618, Kepler set aside the familiar comfort of circles and began comparing the swiftest and slowest passages of each planet. What emerged was not a celestial melody for the ear, but a grammar of intervals: change measured against change.

The interval is the instrument

His diagrams ask us to hold two motions at once. Mars tightens its course, Saturn relents, and the page gives each turn a proportion rather than a picture. Four centuries later, that restraint still feels radical: wonder made accountable to measure.
