FIELD NOTE 04 / CULTURE
THE YELLOW LINE IS THE LOUDEST THING ON THE ROAD
Painted steel, loud sound, and the night grammar of Nairobi.
THE BAND HOLDS THE CHAOS TOGETHER
I first noticed the band before I noticed the chrome. On Ngong Road, a yellow break cut through ultraviolet paint, holding the whole flank to the rules while every other panel argued for attention.
By 2019, the best crews were treating a matatu as a moving publication: portraits at the windows, route numbers in hard lettering, and a speaker grille that made the curb feel like a front row. The joke was never separate from the craft.
