A Quiet Page Has Teeth

The best reading surfaces are not empty; they hold back just enough to make each mark accountable.

In Kyoto last winter, I watched a printer reject a stack of sample sheets because the surface was too eager. The paper shone before the words arrived. A good page waits; it lets the sentence decide where the room begins.

Restraint is not the same as silence

White space becomes useful only when it has pressure around it. A narrow rule, a pale byline, one measured paragraph: these small decisions give the reader a path without raising their voice. The page does not disappear. It teaches attention.
