The case for the last clutchless second
Quickshifters made the upchange invisible. So why does the data say our riders are still leaving a tenth on the table out of turn three?
Last winter I spent two weeks parked in the dyno cell with nothing but a logger and a thermal camera, chasing a ghost. Our telemetry said the bike was upshifting in 38 milliseconds, clean and flat. The riders said it felt slower than that. They were right, and the numbers were lying.
Where the tenth actually goes
The quickshifter cuts ignition, the gear engages, ignition returns. On paper that loop closes before you finish blinking. But out of a third-gear corner under full lean, the rider is feathering the throttle and managing slip — and a flat-cut shift unsettles a chassis already living on its edge. They roll off. That roll-off, not the shift, is the missing tenth.
So we stopped chasing shift speed and started shaping the torque curve across the cut instead. A softer ramp back into power — fifteen milliseconds of deliberate restraint — gave the rear tyre time to settle. The lap times came down. The riders stopped rolling off. The last clutchless second, it turns out, is the one you give back on purpose.
