Field note / 07
A Door Can Hold an Entire Street
In the old quarter, a painted threshold is not an accent; it is the house’s first act of hospitality and defense.
Last winter, I walked the Gaotai quarter at noon, when the upper storeys leaned into the lane and turned the wall below into a band of shade. Every opening made the same argument: earth can be precise.
The threshold is the room’s first sentence
Look closely and the decoration is structural. Tall poplar panels repeat the height of the doorway; a pomegranate lintel marks the centre; a quiet brass glint keeps the eye moving through the plaster.
