The black house keeps its history in the bands
In the qara üy, each dyed band turns shelter into a record of weather, movement, and memory.
A room assembled as a record
At the edge of the Aral delta, the qara üy is not an empty room waiting for furniture. Its lattice is wrapped in named bands: the red qizil qur, the pale ak-baskur, and reed screens that temper the wind before it reaches the felt.
The palette refuses to settle into decoration. Ochre, crimson, indigo, and pistachio sit beside soot-black wool, their uneven edges preserving the pressure of a hand at the loom. In winter light, the bands map the door, the sleeping place, and the family’s stored textiles.
