I walked the eastern rim before the morning lorries began, when the spoil tips still held a pale crust from the night air. The ground was not white. It was warmer, greyer, dustier: a body of feldspar and mica reduced to a quiet engineering fact.
Leave the cut visible
The worst memorial would be a smooth pasture pretending nothing happened. A better one keeps the terraces, grades the dangerous edges, and lets one milky blue lake remain as a measured witness. The clay pit is already a document; design should edit it, not bleach it.
