The Park Was Never Ready
A field note on amber promises, electric fences, and the cost of opening before the systems are ready.
A Sign Is Not A System
I arrived at Resin Park in October 1993, when the rain had turned every service road the color of coffee. At the visitor center, a fresh amber sign promised controlled wonder; behind it, an electric fence ticked steadily in the dark.
The failure was not the animals. It was the confidence around them: a gate approved on paper, a radio left charging in a jeep, a night-shift crew told that the red light was only a drill. We built a system that looked complete from the road.
By dawn, the gates still stood. The promise had changed: a park is only as safe as the handoff between its alarms and its people.
