Power never sits still: it cuts a path, changes shape,
and keeps the page alive.
On the third winter of our reading room, I traced every appearance of the golden staff through a 1592 woodblock facsimile. It never behaves like a prop. In one panel it is a boundary line; in the next, it becomes a bridge, a verdict, or the exact measure of a god’s impatience.
A rule with room to leap
That is why the best pages of the pilgrimage feel carved rather than illustrated. Black keys hold the scene in place, vermilion makes the mask speak, and a small flash of gilt tells the eye where motion begins. The frame is strict; what happens inside it is gloriously untamed.
